Nassau County residents don’t have many options to buy fresh produce directly from farms due to the fact that most farms on Long Island are located in Suffolk County. Cornell Cooperative Extension runs mobile markets, farm stands, and a weekly farmers’ market in Eisenhower Park during the summer and fall months. CCE has built relationships with multiple farms on Long Island to help bring a variety of produce to the residents of Nassau County through these markets.

CCE of Nassau is looking to expand its partnership with the residents of Nassau County by setting up a Community Supported Agriculture(CSA) program. The goal is to provide members with a true farm to table experience, by sourcing local produce from farms on the east end of Long Island to Nassau County residents.Shares will be packed and distributed by aspiring 4H entrepreneurs.

FAQ

What is CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture, In it’s simplest form, it’s a partnership between farmers and their local community where both parties share the benefits and support of sustainable, local agriculture.Farmers receive upfront capital to support the farm while customers will receive fresh, locally grown produce.

Why should I join the CCE CSA?

Besides receiving delicious produce straight from Long Island’s farms, you will also support the 4H youth in our local community.Their experiences with CCE will help them utilize the skills needed to someday run their own business. You will also meet like-minded people who are interested in supporting farms, getting newsletters with tailored recipes and farm highlights Our goal is to highlight the local farms in our area and tell their stories! What can I expect in a typical CSA share each week?

Unfortunately, there are no guarantee to which fruits and vegetables will be made available during the season, but a share will consist of roughly 15-25 lbs of delicious veggies, fruit, and fresh herbs for every pick up!

How/where will the produce be distributed?

This year in order to include CCE of Nassau’s 4H program we have decided to move on from the market style pickup that was used last year, to a boxed CSA model.Boxes will be assembled with the freshest produce available by the 4H Youth. You will receive a predetermined share that will include a variety of veggies, fruit, and herbs.

What if I can't pick up my share on my pickup day?

This year you will have a choice to pickup your produce from 2 locations.During checkout please choose a pickup location. We understand that life happens, so please contact us as at least 24 hours in advance to come up with an alternative pickup if you are unable to come on your scheduled day.If you can't make it to the farm on either of the pickup days, we suggest sending a friend or neighbor to pick up your share. You are also welcome to donate your share for the week.Any shares that have not been picked up will be given to our volunteers.

What if there’s a crop failure? Do I get my money back?

This is part of the risk of joining a CSA. You are investing in Mother Nature’s cooperation and in the farms experience in farming. There is no refund if there is a crop failure. Under normal circumstances, there is plenty to offer members however our partnership with other farms will allow us to have navigate those hard times, should they arise.

Are eggs available?

Yes, but please note they will be sold at a first come first serve basis.

Will there be any add-ons this year?

Yes! We will be offering a flower share for $15/week where you will receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers with every pickup. We will also be offering a weekly $15 Taste New York gift bag.The state-of-the-art Long Island Welcome Center includes a Taste NY Market to showcase a broad selection of locally made products that include honey, jam, coffee, tea, snacks, beverages, and beauty products. It is located off of the Long Island Expressway.
