EMF/Environmental Science Educator

Location: East Meadow, NY

Position Summary:

This position will serve as an Environmental Science Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County (CCE-NC) and will implement existing CCE-NC environmental educational programming and activities at East Meadow Farm (EMF) and throughout Nassau County. Program topics include but are not limited to: agriculture, garden based learning, horticulture, 4-H classes and programs, marine and environmental science. The Environmental Sciences Educator will deliver research-based programs utilizing existing curriculum and resources at East Meadow Farm (EMF) and throughout Nassau County. This position will also coordinate assigned administrative aspects of the Program and will assist the Supervisor with marketing efforts for programming. This position will also assist with other miscellaneous projects/duties that need to be completed at EMF and other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and one (1) year of transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid New York State Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Coursework or experience in education and teaching to youth audiences.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences and work with youth audiences of all ages.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate educational programs.
  • Strong interpersonal and public relations skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.
  • Basic computer and word processing skills.
  • Physical ability to demonstrate environmental garden based education techniques, especially digging soil, regularly stooping and kneeling, ability to carry 20 lbs. (soil, tools).
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tool, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).
  • Ability to utilize program resources from the organization and the community.
  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a part-time, non-exempt position, 12 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $19.21 - $21.00, commensurate with experience.
