Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator

Location: East Meadow, NY

Position Summary:

This position will serve as the Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County and will be responsible for the day-to-day management, organization, and coordination of all aspects of Urban and Community Forestry educational programing. Primary responsibilities will include but are not limited to: coordination and implementation of all educational programs; management of administrative functions; and supervision of Urban and Community Forestry staff, volunteers, and seasonal interns. Program topics include but are not limited to: urban and community forestry best management practices, municipal management planning, local tree ordinances, tree health and diagnostics, invasive species, and green infrastructure planning. This position will work directly with communities, both hands-on and administratively, to improve best tree management practices, provide technical support for planning and implementation projects, identify funding sources, and support both municipal staff and local tree advisory committees to provide recommendations for improved urban tree management. The Urban and Community Forestry Coordinator will collaborate with local governments, environmental groups, and community volunteers by facilitating community workshops and trainings and serve as a subject matter expert on urban forestry and tree health topics. This position will also work directly with professional arborists and related industry groups to provide opportunities for professional development and pathways for individuals to obtain ISA Certified Arborist credentials. This position will work in diverse communities and settings across Nassau County and must be comfortable and able to communicate in urban, suburban and rural communities utilizing various delivery methods to include the use of social media. This position will work with other Cornell Cooperative Extension program areas and be supportive of an Association team approach and support its foundations. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, or equivalent education (High School Diploma/GED and 1 year of transferrable program/functional experience – i.e. Relevant Certification, Professional Development or Education, Demonstrated Experience in Arboriculture or other Related Field).
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 20-50 lbs. regularly.
  • Must be willing to work in diverse and sometimes challenging weather conditions for long work hours.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional tools and methods.
  • Ability to utilize computers, including experience with Microsoft Word and Excel and internet communication programs.
  • Ability to follow through on commitments.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle stressful situations in a calm and effective manner.
  • Experience working with diverse groups of people.
  • Teamwork and organization skills.
  • Self-motivated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry, Professional Horticulture, or other related field
  • Three (3) years of experience in Forestry
  • Two (2) years of experience in management and administration of others.
  • ISA Certified Arborist in good standing, or have the ability to obtain credentials within one year of hire
  • Experience and success at grant applications.
  • Experience in finance and budgeting.
  • Spanish Language Skills preferred.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a temporary, full-time, non-exempt position, 40 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is between $23.00 - $24.00 an hour, commensurate with experience. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
