EFNEP Nutrition Educator

Location: East Meadow, NY

Position Summary:

This position will serve as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) Nutrition Educator for Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County. The EFNEP Nutrition Educator will primarily be responsible for the delivery of established EFNEP public education programming to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices for EFNEP program participants. Program participants will include limited resource parents, care givers with children under the age of 19 and youth throughout Nassau County. Educational programming includes, but is not limited to: general nutrition, food preparation, food safety and food budgeting. Nutrition education will take place at various community sites throughout Nassau County virtually and face to face. Other position responsibilities include but are not limited to: recruitment of participants; collecting and managing participant data ensuring confidentiality at all times; participate in on-going in-service education and staff meetings in Nassau County, New York City, Ithaca, and other locations as required. This position will also assist with marketing efforts for EFNEP programming in collaboration with other nutrition educators in the EFNEP region.

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent education (GED/High School Diploma and 1 year transferrable program/functional experience).
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License and the ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ability to transport/move supplies and equipment, climb stairs with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in English.
  • Ability to present effective educational lessons to target audiences (one-on-one and group) virtually and face to face and work with diverse adult and youth audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize computer technologies for educational and communication purposes (i.e. Internet, Microsoft Office Suite, etc) and web conferencing software.
  • Experience with social media.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nutrition-related knowledge/experience/background preferred.
  • Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read and write proficiently) in Spanish.
  • Experience in adult and youth education or other relevant work experience.
  • Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.
  • Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods.
  • Familiarity with reviewing and following recipes and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.
  • Experience working with the target audience (limited resource).
  • Ability and willingness to maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • Good judgment and problem solving skills and ability to keep information confidential.

POSITION DETAILS:

This position is a part-time, non-exempt position, 30 hours per week. The hourly rate for this position is $18.26 - $20.00, commensurate with experience. This position, based on eligibility, offers a comprehensive benefit package, to include: health and dental insurance, NYS retirement, vacation and sick leave.
