Temporary Urban Forestry Educator

Location:  East Meadow, NY

Position Summary:

Serve as a member of the Community Urban Forestry team to assist with program development, delivery, evaluation and administrative direction, management and coordination in the area of Reforestation and Urban Forestry. Work in conjunction with association staff, Regional Cornell Teams, local organizations, and partner agencies to provide resources. Responsible for providing input for planning local educational Urban Forestry program. Promote program according to information provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension, DEC and US Forest Service guidelines and based on the objectives of the USDA and NYS Department of Agriculture Markets. Interacts with the public through delivery of Urban Forestry Department programs and grants and coordinates tree replanting as per maps provided by the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets. Create programming and structure within organization to establish a sustainable Urban Forestry Department for the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County. Assist with research and writing of forestry grants.This is a Temp position for a 1 year grant ending on December 1, 2019.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant evidence based research experience may substitute.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Must become a certified Arborist within the first year.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.
  • Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Excel.
  • Ability to speak publicly and clearly to address large groups in order to conduct public educational workshops.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to work effectively with advisory boards and committees, community and funding partners.
  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal educational programs.
  • Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts.
  • Ability and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural sensitivity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through verbal, written and visual channels using traditional methods and educational tools, as well as electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).
  • Ability to identify and utilize program resources from the organization and the community.
  • Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders.
  • Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Coursework or experience in education and teaching to an adult audience highly preferred.
  • Experience with Cooperative Extension or other similar educational organizations.
  • Experience in guiding and collaborating with volunteers.
  • Ability to identify and develop volunteer leadership.
  • Previous experience in public speaking and the ability to give presentations.
