Major Duties of Position:

The Camp Specialist will lead all aspects of the Dorothy P. Flint Nassau County 4-H Camp. This is a year-round exempt position responsible for the operational, administrative, programmatic and marketing functions of a residential summer youth camp and fall, winter and spring camp programs.

The mission of CCE-NC’s DPF 4‑H Camp is to provide youth with fun, safe, educational and developmentally appropriate camp experiences, both residential (during the summer) and through school and youth-group visits (year-round), under the guidance of positive role models who emphasize community building, positive social interactions, environmental awareness and skill building. The Camp is located in Riverhead, NY on 140 acres bordering the Long Island Sound. The setting is rustic and includes a working farm.

During the camp summer season, the Camp Specialist supervises the Summer Camp Director and oversees all camp operations. The Camp Specialist will live on camp property while camp is in session (June, July and August). He or she will work closely with the Summer Camp Director to ensure the overall safety and management of the camp during the summer residential season. This includes compliance with New York State Department of Health regulations and American Camp Association standards. The Camp Specialist will report to the CCE-Nassau office in Jericho or East Meadow at least one day per week (as needed and determined by the CCE-Nassau Executive Director).

When the residential camp is not in session, during September through May, the Camp Specialist will split his or her time between the Jericho or East Meadow office and the Camp.

The Camp Specialist will be responsible for administrative and programmatic leadership, including overall operation of the camp program; budget development and monitoring; development and implementation of marketing plans that successfully reach enrollment targets to ensure fiscal viability; risk management and compliance with all health and safety regulations; and enhancing utilization of the camp year-round. He or she also will assist with developing direction and priorities with input from program advisory committees, program participants, Cornell Cooperative Extension staff, and Cornell faculty.

The person selected for this position also will maintain direct linkages with Cornell faculty and program units and county extension staff, as well as maintain and enhance relationships with appropriate agencies such as the Department of Health, county Parks, NYS DEC, Nassau County schools and other organizations and groups on a local, regional and statewide basis in the area of youth development.

Qualifications and Experience Pre-requisites:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with appropriate subject matter specialization.
  • Two years volunteer or related work experience.
  • At least 24 weeks of administrative or supervising experience in camping to meet Department of Health regulations.
  • At least 25 years or older as per ACA Standards and have a valid NYS Driver’s license.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to meet acceptable background check standards.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when needed.
  • Ability to live at camp for all of the residential camp season.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and strong teaching and group facilitation skills. 


  • Management and program experience in a residential camp setting.
  • Knowledge of NYS Health Department regulations and American Camp Association standards.
  • Coursework in youth development, outdoor recreation or education.
  • Certifications in any of the following areas: CPR, Lifeguard, WSI and/or EMT. Certification as an instructor of CPR and ability to certify others.
